When reviewing your insurance policy and making every attempt to insure that you have adequate coverage for your marine interests, your dinghy may be overlooked. It is not unusual to omit coverage on a dinghy for some, but please know that there is coverage available.
Some dinghy coverage is automatically included on specific policies if your vessel is 30' or above. One last reminder regarding your dinghy is to please, please, please, sure that when your dinghy is not use it is secured and locked in a safe place. It is much too common that people lose their dinghies when being far too trusting of those around them.
Others must be scheduled in addition to your vessel for a fee costing anywhere from $1.50 to $2.50 per $100 dollar value. The dinghy coverage that goes along with vessels 30' and above allows up to 16' of dinghy in length and 40 mph in horsepower. If your boat is under 30' in length then you must get coverage for your dinghy scheduled separately. Also, the primary use for a dinghy must be for transportation to and from your boat. If you are using the dinghy to buzz around the bay while doing some inlet fishing or just jetting from boat to boat and visiting etc., then you must cover your vessel as a second boat.
Also, please be sure to alert your insurance agent if you tow your dinghy to be sure that you have adequate coverage. If you are covered by The St Paul/Marine MGA insurance policy then you may need to look into the endorsement for dinghies in tow. Call your agent.
